Engraved von G. Heck 1850, revised 1855. Remarkably detailed mid-19th century antique map, one of a series of variant issues with revisions. Engraved with original outline hand color. Scarce folio-sheet map. Inset maps of Canary Islands & Cape Colony South Africa (bottom left), St. Helena & Mascarene Islands (both bottom right). Fictitious Mountains of the Moon is identified situated running north to south from Djibouti near Gulf of Aden down to Equatorial zone. Interior still largely blank, although lower central interior is now connected by a known route across from modern day Angola on Atlantic to Mozambique on the Indian Ocean. Minor light toning and small scattered age spotting, perhaps small minor paper flaws, but to our eyes and for most people, an nice looking example of this uncommon large-format variant state map.
